The highpoint of Australian media will be showcased in Tamworth in 2020 with the announcement that the Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism
to be held in the Country Music Capital.
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said Tamworth was very familiar with hosting national and international events and so the promise of having the Walkley Awards will be a fantastic boost for the city.
“This is fantastic news, it will showcase Tamworth as a destination, that we can hold significant, high-profile events like the Walkleys.
“I understand that by hosting the Walkley Awards an estimated 600 of the country’s top reporters, storytellers and media leaders will flock to Tamworth.
“I am so proud my hometown has the support of the NSW Government to support ground-breaking, world-class journalism.
“Industry events and conferences bring enormous benefit to regional NSW centres like Tamworth, because we know that overnight business visitors often spend more than holiday makers – on average the visitor expenditure is almost double.
“Tamworth Regional Events and Entertainment Centre is more than capable to host a gala event like this. Look at our Business Chamber awards, we get close to 1000 people attending with five star catering in a magnificent venue.
“I was talking to Council’s head of Entertainment Venues, Peter Ross this morning and he’s so excited because he knows we can put on a five star show to rival anything in Australia,” Mr Anderson concluded.
Mr Ross said Tamworth Regional Council’s councillors and staff are excited about the opportunity hosting the awards will bring.
“We’re looking forward to showcasing what we can deliver to a national audience,” he said.
“This is going to be a fantastic for Tamworth, there aren’t many regional cities that have a complex like TRECC that can deliver such an event.”
