Eight things to do in the Tamworth region between Christmas and New Year

350x350 horse riding.jpgWe know that the lead-up to Christmas can be hectic – whether you’re preparing for the arrival of the in-laws, braving the shops for last minute food supplies or making sure the kids can’t get their hands on presents early.

So we figure come Boxing Day, it’s time for everyone to unwind and enjoy a day out. Here’s our pick of the best activities for getting your family out of the house between Christmas and New Year.

1. Get arty

Head to the Tamworth Regional Gallery to see fantastic exhibitions including Awesome Achievers: Portrait stories from Australians of the Year and Behind the Lines: the Year’s Best Political Cartoons 2017. The Gallery will be open Wednesday 27 through to Saturday 30 December from 10am – 4pm.

2. Dance the night away
Put on those dancing shoes and take the family for a night out of live music. Check out who’s playing here.

3. Hit the road
Get on the open road and head up to Nundle and Hanging Rock on a family road trip. Stop by the Nundle Woollen Mill (open Tuesday 26 to Sunday 31 December from 10am – 4pm), grab lunch at the Peel Inn (open for lunch and dinner Tuesday 26 to Sunday 31 December) and then head up to the Hanging Rock lookout to show off stunning views of the Peel Valley.

4. Beat the heat
Get some relief from the hot weather by taking a dip at either Barraba Memorial Swimming Pool Complex, Kootingal War Memorial Swimming Pool, Manilla Memorial Swimming Pool, Nundle Swimming Pool, South and West Tamworth War Memorial Swimming Pool (Scully) and Tamworth Olympic Swimming Pool. Head to the Tamworth Regional Council website for details on opening hours.

5. Get your “jump” on
Jump and bounce for hours in more than 870m² of trampoline heaven at Jump Up, Tamworth. Try out your wall running skills, slam dunk in the net, experience the foam pit or hit the dodgeball courts. With Café TZ providing a great vantage point for the adults that would prefer to sit back with a coffee, it’s a great activity to get the family out of the house. Open 10am to 5pm on Wednesday 27, Thursday 28 and Saturday 30 December, 10am to 8pm on Friday 29 December and 10am to 2pm on Sunday 31 December.

6. Saddle up for an adventure
Grab the crew and book in now with Tamworth and Kootingal Horse Riding Adventures for an experience of the great outdoors and a special taste of the Tamworth region. Jason and the team will be saddling up three times a day – 9am, 2pm and 6pm – from Tuesday 26 through to Sunday 31 December.

7. Take in the big screen
Grab your popcorn and take a break at Forum 6 cinemas, where kids film Coco will be premiering on Boxing Day alongside science fiction comedy/drama Downsizing, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Hugh Jackman’s The Greatest Showman.

8. Sneak in some quiet time
Head down to the Tamworth Regional Library to top up your summer reading pile or loan a DVD for the holidays. It’ll be open Wednesday 27 through to Saturday 30 December from 10am – 4pm.
