Eight fantastic & free things to do in the Tamworth region
There’s nothing more satisfying in the world than having a great day out, but knowing you haven’t had to spend a dime on it.
We all love free things. Seriously, who doesn’t?
Well you’ve come to the right place. Because if it’s free and fantastic experiences you’re after, the Tamworth region’s got it made.
1. Less talking, more walking
Love long walks on the beach? Sorry, we can’t help you.
But long walks along the river? You’re in the right place!
Check out the Peel River Levee Bank walk, which follows the top of the levee banks from Scotts Road in the south of town, through the CBD to Jewry Street in the north. If you’re up for a bit of a challenge, the Kamilaroi Track might be more for you, winding its way through the bushland of Oxley Park over several kilometres from it’s starting point at Tamworth’s Oxley Lookout.
2. Marsupial Park
Visting the Marsupial Park is sure to put a smile on anyone’s face. You can get up close with wallabies, talk to the cockatoos, and see plenty of animals including peacocks and emus, or visit the playground.
With a nice picnic area, it is also a great spot to pack some lunch.
3. We’re going on a picnic!
Grab some friends, pack your picnic rug and spread out somewhere where space won’t be an issue – we’ve got beautiful parks and gardens just waiting to host your next picnic.
Try the Botanic Gardens, part of the Victoria Park Precinct in East Tamworth where over 28 hectares of gardens are waiting with your name on it with picnic areas, walking tracks, toilets. And the best news, it’s wheelchair accessible!
Another fantastic spot to picnic is Tamworth’s own Bicentennial Park, right in the centre of town on Kable Avenue and next door to Tamworth Regional Playground. 4. A view from the top
If it’s panoramic views that give you the feels, the Tamworth region is ready and waiting. In Tamworth itself, head to Oxley Lookout in East Tamworth, which has views of the city and the Peel River Valley. Just north-east of town, the spectacular Moonbi Lookout has views of the plains below Moonbi Hills, whilst the Hanging Rock lookout is located at an elevation of 1,100m and shows off the Peel River Valley. To the North West, get a view of Barraba from Adams’ Lookout, or check out the Manilla township, Namoi River Valley and surrounding farmland from the VJ Byrnes Lookout.
5. Art buffs rejoice!
But it’s not just the art buffs who should be pleased, because the second oldest regional gallery in New South Wales believes in making the arts accessible to all, which means there’s no entry charge! Located on Peel Street, Tamworth Regional Gallery regularly hosts exhibitions of national significance, runs regular workshops and is open to the public all weekend. Need we say more?
6. Get ready for a wheelie good time!
If you or the kids love skating, scootering and bike sports, we’ve got the destination for you! The Tamworth Regional Skate Park is a state-of-the-art facility and totally unique in the New England North West region, catering to all abilities. Jump into the bowl to show off with tricks or there is a smaller “flow” park for those who want a slower pace. It’s a much-loved community space used by kids, teens and adults and – you guessed it – it’s totally free!
7. Got a hankering for some history?
Maybe you’re into local history, maybe you’ve got some ancestors you’re tracking down…
At the Moonbi Museum, you’ll find local family history, the story of Thunderbolt plus an exploration of the history of the poultry industry (which used to be pretty big ‘round these parts).
8. Fall in line with some legends
Take a stroll down the Pioneers Parade in Bicentennial Park and check out the bronze busts, where you can hang out with the likes of Tex Morton, Stan Coster and Reg Lindsay who have been immortalised there. If country music is your jam, this one’s a must-do.
