Tamworth - Food and beverage destination
The Tamworth region, with its abundance of rich soils, magnificent waterways and varied geography, is an outstanding food and beverage destination for visitors. On offer is quality beef, milk, rainbow trout, honey, wine, garlic and coffee – to name just a few.
In the city, fresh local produce and boutique products are available at farmers’ markets in Bicentennial Park and in Peel Street. Markets at Le Pruneau French restaurant
feature organic fruit and veggies, as well as delicious cheeses handmade on-site from locally produced milk.
Vineyards in the region include Merilba Estate
in Uralla which is a pleasurable affair, with its rustic, renovated cellar door overlooking the beautiful valley. It’s open weekends for tastings and lunch bookings. The estate is also the lunch venue on a New England Wine Tour, a day-trip setting off at Uralla and dropping by some of the stylish and charming wineries of this scenic region.
, between Tamworth and Uralla at Kentucky, is truly one-of-a-kind. Its highly creative owners Stephen and Lyn Dobson run a speakeasy jazz and blues bar and theatre; Restaurant Pinot, which matches fabulous meals made with regional produce with the winery’s cool-climate wines; Dobson’s Distillery, which makes iconic gin, whiskey, vodka, liqueurs and bitters; and Dobson’s Brewery, where eight craft beers are developed. Eastview Estate opens several times per week for tastings or lunches.
New England Brewing Company
in Uralla makes craft beers, some all year and some seasonally, and also offers tours and tastings. This is a growing niche industry in the region – some connoisseurs even hold craft beer afternoons to share their passion.
Kitty Crawford Estate in the Dungowan Valley comprises not only Ironbark Creek Winery with cellar door – the property also grows beef cattle, as well as pasture-fed, grain-finished water buffalo. The steaks are then treated to confidential ageing, cryovacing, preparation and cooking techniques to be served at the owners’ sSs BBQ Barns, a multiple prize-winning steakhouse in Tamworth.
Some of the best meat in the world is produced on Tamworth’s back door: Myall Springs’ organic beef and lamb at Rangari west of Manilla; and The Free Range Butcher’s grass-feed beef and lamb, and pasture-fed, free-range pork at Barraba are just two examples. Colly Creek Pastoral Company at Willow Tree runs more than 2500 head of pasture-fed, grain-finished black angus cattle, from which the 20 best steers each month are chosen exclusively for Graze Restaurant & Bistro at the Willow Tree Inn.
Arc-en-Ciel Trout Farm in Nundle hatches, raises and humanely harvests rainbow trout with great care, producing firm-fleshed, fine-textured fish. The farm supplies many trout products, whole fresh trout, fresh fillets, whole smoked trout and smoked fillets, smoked trout pate and rainbow trout caviar.
People from many cultural backgrounds have made Tamworth home, and share the cuisine of their countries at restaurants (such as Thai, Lao, Indian, Chinese, Lebanese, South African, French, Italian and Malaysian) and from stalls at markets and festivals.
Taste Tamworth Festival
The annual Taste Tamworth Festival has become an important date on the Australian culinary calendar. For ten days, Tamworth and surrounding regions showcase the best in local food and produce around April/May.
The event includes an array of attractions, including the city’s annual ‘pop-up bar’ – where a character-filled laneway is transformed into a funky vintage bar. The Long Lunch is a unique fine-dining experience with local chefs combining their skills to create a five-course menu using the best in fresh local produce.
Visitors and locals converge upon the city’s Bicentennial Park for the annual Taste in the Park – a day of local produce, tasting plates, live music and children’s activities.
Around the region the Farm Gate Trail is open all year round with special tasting sessions, market days, honey production tours and live music.
