Westpac Chopper 3 Hour Mountain Bike Challenge

Tamworth Mountain Bike Park
Forest Road
North Tamworth, NSW, Australia

0_7620_25Sep2017120000_Mountain-Bike-Challenge-DT-Web-Tile.png The Tamworth Westpac Chopper MTB Challenge is a mountain bike event with a focus on fun that is designed to cater for all levels of bike rider from the 8 year old Dirtmaster to the 60+ Super Masters from Novice, Junior, and Weekend Warrior to Elite (with special MTB events for the Under 8’s also run on the day) This is a community event to raise money for a great cause and to encourage people to get out and get active. Entry fees have been kept as low as possible and include a FREE LUNCH for all riders. All profits go to our Westpac Chopper – an essential regional service we all depend on.

3hr Cross Country Endurance Event Format
As an endurance XC event, entrants complete as many laps as they can, with the final lap starting under the 3 hour time limit. Tracks used are all classified for cross country riding with ratings from Green Circle (Easy) to Blue Square (Intermediate) depending on the Course option chosen.

Solo and Team Entry Options
Riders can register as SOLOS to go it alone for 3 hours, or 2 PLUS TAG TEAMS (minimum 2 riders, maximum - however many teammates you want). Team members ride their lap before tagging the next rider for their lap in whatever order they want, for however many laps they can.

Choose Your Challenge

Relaxed Recreational Challenge – this course is 6kms of flowing fun non-technical single track with the fun factor turned up to the max and climbing and technical factors turned down to the min for beginners and those wanting a more relaxed ride. This is a clover leaf circuit that comes back into the event center thrice. This means for primary age children and those who would prefer shorter stints, tag team changes can take place at the 2.8km, 4.5km or 6km marks within in each full lap. Parents are also welcome to escort younger riders if needed.

Smash the Mountain Challenge – This course is the core Tamworth Mountain Bike Park 10km racing circuit including our infamous panoramic Central Mountain and classic XCO North Hill track plus the 6km Recreational circuit. Note: unlike the Recreational Challenge, all team members must be 13 years or older and be able to complete the full lap of this circuit for the lap to count.

This is a Mountain Bike Challenge not a Mountain Bike Race
So the Family Team of 5 can challenge the elite solo, challenging the Teenage Trio, challenging the 7 Super Masters, challenging whatever other team wants to rock up, roll around, have fun within each of two Challenge Options to support our Westpac Chopper.

Call your mates, motivate the family, convince yourself – grab your bike, get out, get active and rise to the Challenge.

Nestled in the hills right on the edge of town, Tamworth MTB Park is purpose-built to international standards - wicked flow - awesome fun. This fantastic facility truly offers something for everyone, with 8 graded loop options, plus a separate kid's MTB loop, pump track, trike path, play park and MTB Skills park, all centred on a fully developed Central Picnic Area and Event Centre.

Tamworth Mountain Bike Park is located 800 metres from town (just past and opposite the Tamworth Tip) on Forest Road which is an extension of Bligh St.  Bligh St runs north off Peel St (Tamworth’s main street) heading west (or just Google Map it).

Tamworth is located about 400km (5hrs) north of Sydney, about 300km (4hrs) north of Newcastle (thanks to an awesome 200km stretch of freeway out of Sydney) and about 600km (7hrs) south of Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

At Registration you'll need to flash us your MTBA Card if you are a MTBA member. If you're not a MTBA member, you will need to show your photo ID and 8 week free member trial number or take out an MTBA event day license.

We are accepting Team Changes on the day, and if you have a substitute rider please ask them to bring a completed New Rider Form to Rego. PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY (!) if you or your team has any changes to be made!

A parent or guardian will need to be present to sign the event waiver for riders who are under 18 years old.

Smash the Mountain Challenge Course is over 10 kms of purpose built, flowing MTB single track - jumps, berms, rocks gardens, chutes, creeks, gullies, bridges A and B lines, and our very own mountain with the best views of Tamworth (would not be mountain biking without it!). The elite riders should be clocking around a 30 minute laps; the rest of us weekend warriors somewhere between 35-45 minutes.

Recreational Challenge Course with less technical features and climbing designed specifically for those wanting to experience great entry level Mountain Biking at a top level event. A relative beginner should clock about a 25-30 minute lap.

Camping is available for out of town visitors, but please book as we have limited flat space. Sites will be marked to ensure we cater for all you happy campers.

Please email enquires/bookings to steven.mair@det.nsw.edu.au with your camping numbers and tent/camper/caravan set up details.

For those who are not keen on camping, town is literally just down the street so there is easy access to great accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.

Check out www.destinationtamworth.com.au for accommodation options as well as a host of other information about our region.

- Toilets (sorry no showers)
- Town Water
- Technical Bike support from our great Local Bike Shops
- Catering and coffee all day by our local Westpac Chopper Service
- Mobile Phone Coverage: We are right on the edge of town so almost all of the park has phone service (except for the depths of Secret Valley which you should be flowing through at 15-25km/hr on your downhill run from Central Mountain - so no stacking there OK?).

Except for the obvious (bike, helmet, gloves, race nutrition, water, toolkit & spares etc), you might want to bring a pop-up tent for shelter beside the track, and a chair to relax in between laps.

Tamworth like many of the inland areas is renounced for tyre piercing nasties. Make sure you have your tyres topped up with a good sealant.

Day visitors and those staying in town need to park in the Main Public Car Park located at the entrance to Tamworth Mountain Bike Park.

Those camping can park at their designated marked campsites.

Note: there will be no movement of vehicles within Tamworth Mountain Bike Park from 7:30am to 2:00pm Sunday 5th November as trails cross the entrance road. Please be organised early, or bring a trolley to cart your stuff (Main Car Park is 150m from the event centre).

There is no rubbish removal service available at this event - and as mountain bikers are all firm believers in “we leave only tracks” we thank you in advance for taking home all of your rubbish. Please check around your pit area when packing up. There are one or two public bins around the venue, but if these are full please do not leave anything beside or on top of these bins.

All MTB trails will be closed to the general public during Sunday 5th November. The Kids Track, Skills Park and Pump Track will be open for use by your kids (or you) during the event.

The NSW Tobacco Legislation Amendment Act 2012 enforces "no smoking in spectator areas of sports grounds". How this applies to our event is that we ask anyone who wishes to smoke to do it at least 50m distance from all tents, team pit areas, and spectators. Anyone not complying with this will be asked to leave the event.

Results and Updates will be posted online during the event for you to check at your leisure…or as a little reminder to get on your bike and go harder.

Results will be forwarded for posting on the TAMMTB Website and Facebook page ASAP after the event.

Presentation will be scheduled as soon as possible after the track is cleared. Expect something a bit different, after all we are in the bush.

We're looking for willing people to join our event crew - if you'd like to volunteer to help us out on race day we'd really appreciate it! The type of roles for volunteers might be marshalling, registration, event centre set up, assisting with timing, etc. Volunteers will be well looked after during the event, and hopefully you'll also be rewarded by knowing you've helped the participants have a fun day on their bikes! If you'd like to be involved, please give us a call on 0408 279 522.

Tamworth weather in November - beautiful, sunny days that can warm up. Generally speaking – great for riding – but bring plenty of water, electrolytes and use them well.

Tamworth's tracks are mostly clay based, meaning awesome hard pack in the dry, but sadly unstable slime when wet (a lot like Wylde MTB Park Sydney). So while our tracks do drain and dry brilliantly, they cannot be used when wet.

If Mother Nature decides to rain on Tamworth's parade the event will be postponed. In the event of rain leading up to the event, as much notice as is humanly possible will be given, and the event will be pushed back one week. If lightning does strike twice, we will postpone again a week, and will do this a third time if needed. If it rains unexpectedly during the event we will adjust as best we can to protect our trails and keep the race safe.

For those needing a refund if the event is postponed, it will be given minus a service charge to help us cover our basic processing costs.

If you have any questions about this event, please don't hesitate to contact us by email jeff.benson@bigpond.com until 11am Friday 3rd November
